Body, discipline and power in the Industrial School of Natal (1942-1968)
Abstract
We aim to analyze educational practices related to body, discipline and
power in the Escola Industrial de Natal, now called the Instituto Federal de
Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia do Rio Grande do Norte (IFRN) – Campus
Natal Central, which operated from 1942 to 1968. The understandings of
Body, discipline and power grounded in Foucault, Le Breton e Scharagrodsky
are basis for the analysis of sources available for consultation in the
Portal of Memory of the IFRN, located at http://centenario.ifrn.edu.br/. We
concluded that sports practices, orpheonic singing, civic parades, the Corps
of Vigilantes and school culture events such as the Civic Hour printed the
Industrial School of Natal devices to control time and bodies.
