Abstract

By contrasting two distinct models of navigation, originating from Caroline Islands and Marshall Islands, in Micronesia, we sought to discuss the two prevailing theoretical approaches in anthropological debate about navigation – the cognitive theory of navigation and the wayfinding theory. Emphasizing the possibilities and limits of each approach, we argue for the complementarity of these theoretical apparatuses in the anthropological study of navigation.
