Abstract

This text is a reflection on the urban toponymy of the city of Umbuzeiro, which has its spatiality marked by the surname "Pessoa". Some of the characters of this family, who have their crib in this city, named the most diverse city spaces: streets, avenues, squares, schools, public buildings and were carved in busts. In addition to being posthumous honors, this practice became recurrent over a century and transformed the urban landscape into spaces of memory for the benefit of its illustrious children. Thus, such spatiality needs a problematization where it is possible to understand the specificities of each named in its historical contexto, the political interests in perpetuating a certain "official" history, as well as the experiences of those who live in these spaces.
