Abstract

The objective of this article is to analyze the inquisitorial process of the shoemaker André de Freitas Lessa, sentenced - in the first visitation of the Holy Office to the captaincy of Pernambuco (1593-1595) - for the crime of perfect sodomy, which currently corresponds to homosexual anal copulation. The documents suggest the existence of a nucleus of boys, assiduous in the practice of sin nefando and indifferent to the police action of the Inquisition in the then town of Olinda. The cobbler and his "accomplices" responded criminally for maintaining sexually conflicting conduct with the moral values of the Old Regime society.
