Abstract

The article promotes a theoretical discussion about the use of images as a form of knowledge, at a time when the debate about the visual culture is relevant to the understanding of the contemporary world. More specifically, it aims to deepen the issue of employment of images within the field of History, whose work with visual sources has raised theoretical and methodological impasses. Due to the development of the area in Anthropology, specifically in the Anthropology of Image, we propose approaches in both areas, especially regarding the contributions of Anthropology of Image for historiographical field. Throughout the work will be discussed (the potential) of the perspective for historicizing images, notions of history, representation and truth and the image within a society ("Social History of the image"), supported and in constant dialogue with anthropology's concerns of the image such as change of observing the field, otherness and culture.
