This study examines the Brotherhood of Our Lady of the Rosary of Black People in Caicó (RN), highlighting its social significance for the enslaved Black community during the colonial period. Founded in 1771 and officially established in 1775, the brotherhood focused on purchasing manumissions and providing shelter for enslaved individuals who escaped their masters. Primary sources, including manumission letters and inventories, will be analyzed using hermeneutic and heuristic methodologies for critical interpretation. The concept of "Institution" by Justino Magalhães will serve as the theoretical framework to explore the brotherhood's libertarian and social role. Ultimately, the study seeks to underscore the brotherhood's relevance in the struggle for freedom and inclusion of free Black people in a colonial society that marginalized them.
