Between the supernatural and the real

women in Lovecraft Country

Abstract

This research aims to read the television series Lovecraft Country (2020), written by

Misha Green, a black American woman, which addresses black characters in the United States in the 1950s, dialoguing with the concept of intersectionality from the perspective of Akotirene (2019) and with the proposal of a feminism in the veins of Amefricanity proposed by Lélia Gonzalez (2020). Thus, with specific objectives, it analyzes the intersectionality present in these Afro-descendant characters confronted with structural racism, thinks about the discourse produced by the series about these women; as well as reflects on black characters, thinking about how cultural resistance was central to the formation of the American female and black identity. Since this research is of a qualitative, descriptive and cross-sectional nature, it is a documentary analysis based on bibliographic, literary and film research. From such readings in transdisciplinary dialogues with scholars, it was observed that Lovecraft Country (2020) subverts a racist and supremacist logic, present in the author who inspired it and in the time it portrays, offering a multifaceted narrative, where we observe the resilience of African-American cultures through the discourse of female characters to analyze their historical subjects.
