This article approaches at portuguese female emigration to Brazil in the second half of the 19th century. During this period, it is possible to observe an increase in the number of Portuguese women leaving the country, characterizing not only a demographic change, but also a social, cultural and symbolic change in the countries of origin and destination. The official documents produced at the time explain the prevailing gender representations, as well as the process of maintaining sexual roles and identities. Therefore, this paper proposes an analysis of official Portuguese records in order to examine the gender dynamics and power relations that shaped women's participation in the migration process.
