Abstract

This article addresses the experience of migrants from Pedro II, a rural municipality
in the north of Piauí, who moved to São Paulo in the 1980s, working as waiters.
Since migration occurs not only due to economic and climatic factors, but also as a
social practice and a family project for workers (Durham, 1978), the perspective is
to understand the agency of the subjects (Fontes, 2008), their motivations, and the
strategies developed within migration networks (Menezes, 2002). This all takes place
within the space of the metropolis and restaurants, places filled with stigma,
inequalities, and exploitation, that position them in the category of outsiders (Elias;
Scotson, 2000). To report on the social and labor situations, we use the
methodology of Oral History, conducting semi-structured interviews with returning
migrants.
