Our history is permeated with fears. In light of this premise, I aim to analyze how Indigenous resistance in the hinterlands of the captaincy of Rio Grande provoked a constant fear of maintaining and settling such lands, as well as to examine how these supposed threats directly impacted the series of conflicts known as the "Guerra dos Bárbaros”. It is evident that the relationship between the local Indigenous people and the colonizers took on a new configuration. With the colonization project led by the Portuguese Crown and the constant establishment of Europeans in the lands we now call Brazil, the natives of this region began to perceive the situation as a concrete threat. Thus, it becomes clear that fear operates in a cause-and-effect dynamic. Additionally, as Monteiro (2015) points out, Indigenous resistance emerged parallel to the beginning of colonization.
