SEA AND SAND IN LOS QUE AMAN, ODIAN, BY SILVINA OCAMPO Y ADOLFO BIOY CASARES

Abstract

This article explores the possible symbolic articulations of the sea and sand in the novel "Los que aman, odian" by Silvina Ocampo and Adolfo Bioy Casares. Co-authored, this work synthesizes a significant articulation between the detective novel and the narrative of the uncanny and fantastic. Through the analysis of the novel, this article proposes a reflection on how the authors incorporate maritime elements and an entire semantics related to water for the construction of the plot. It also addresses collaborative authorship and its relevance in the work, as well as tracing back to the Argentine literary scene of the 1940s. Drawing on a theoretical framework that includes discussions about literary space (Brandão, 2013), the fantastic and the uncanny (Campra, 2008; Ceserani, 2006; García, 2007, 2009, 2012, among others), and the detective novel (Ponce et al, 2020), the analyses point to experiments in the detective novel and question to what extent there are influences of the fantastic and the uncanny in the narrative, identifying possible links. Finally, it proposes a detailed analysis of how the sea and sand are used by the authors to integrate the novel into its thematic, imagistic, and plot aspects.
