Abstract

This is a translation of a classic essay published by Rudolf Carnap in the journal Erkenntnis. The translation is preceded by an introductory text, which situates the essay and its importance in the context of contemporary philosophy and in Carnap's work. In the essay, Carnap indicates the main features that distinguish what he calls the new logic (the mathematical symbolic logic derived from the works of Frege, Peano and Hilbert, among others) from traditional philosophical logic and explains its importance as a new method of philosophizing.
