Augustinian reverberations on the “theology of human flesh” in Patristic Philosophy

Abstract

Abstract: This research aims, in light of the works of the Church Fathers in Latin and Greek Patristics, to highlight the content of the philosophical discussion on the notion of human flesh, as a body and an existence embodied in the world. The systematic elucidation of the flesh and the relationship between it and the body leads us to reflect on the main object of our investigation, namely, the incarnation of Christianity, where the divine comes closer to the human. The text presented assumes a historical perspective and seeks to make a critical review of the way in which the Church Fathers conceived the body, not only as a place of unbridled passions and sin, but also, in Christianity, the body assumes the place of redemption. In effect, we can say that the Church Fathers knew how to harmoniously synthesize the biblical vision of man with the most important elements of Greek thought and figures relevant to the History of Philosophy. From the ancients, the Greeks to the medieval times, the theme of purity of the soul, of care for the body, the privilege of purity was always considered by Thinkers to be the favorite virtue of the soul that desires to possess God, therefore, “the privilege of those who fight the burning desires of the flesh, with regard to the world and with regard to time.
