Objective: This study aims to verify assess the level of financial literacy of high school students at public institutions in the Municipality of Ituiutaba (State of Minas Gerais, Brazil). It also aims to analyze how the level of financial literacy relates to socioeconomic and demographic factors.
Methodology: Upon probabilistic sampling, a questionnaire was distributed to high school students from different public institutions. Data were analyzed through descriptive statistics, correlation test, normality test, and between-group comparison tests.
Results: The findings showed that most students have good financial attitude, but are not financially literate enough.
Study contributions: The Results point to the need for actions and/or strategies that contribute to the financial literacy of high school students in the area covered by this study. They also suggest that the curricula should be revised when it comes to subjects directly or indirectly associated with financial literacy. This study is expected to contribute to the entire community, as financially literate people tend to manage money efficiently, both in the personal and family dimensions and in the business setting.
