Memories of the Future: The use of archive material in contemporary art

Abstract

This lecture, from the example of the contemporary artists who work with archival materials and documents, has been mooted on how artists have revisited the past in order to build new and different narratives about history.

Author Biography

Priscila Arantes

Priscila Arantes is critic, curator, and researcher in the field of Contemporary Art and cultural manager. She graduated in Philosophy from the University of São Paulo; has Master’s and Doctor’s degrees in Communication and Semiotics from the Catholic University of São Paulo (PUC/SP); and was a Post-doctoral fellow at Pennsylvania State University (USA) and UNICAMP. She is undergraduate and graduate lecturer in PUC-SP since 2002, working in the following courses: Art: History, Criticism and Curatorship; Technology and Digital Media; and Corporeal Arts. She is director and curator of the Palace of Arts, the institution of the Secretary of State for Culture since 2007, and, between 2007 and 2011, was deputy director of MIS (Museum of Image and Sound).
