Abstract

Until recently musical performers followed guidelines based on the observation of work contents/musical analysis and observation of the text/faithfulness to the score. Music, nevertheless, exists solely during its performance, and performances of one same work may differ considerably. The partnership with psychology of music has made possible the development of practice based research as far as strategies and results are concerned; while concurring to consider the performer as a partner in equal footing with the scientist in the field of musical cognition. This has been the main premise for processes of memorization reports (Ginsborg, Chaffin & Demos, 2012), in which decisions made during practice and are transferred to the act of interpreting. Therefore, a virtuous circle is formed, in which it is possible to plan, to predict and to analyse performance results and, at the same time assure that the musician’s primordial goal, the creation of artistic products, remains true to its artistic endeavors and independent from scientific control.
