Abstract

This article discusses the elaboration of a poetical space in the works of Manuel Bandeira, born of memory and figuration: the Recife. Particularly, this article aims to examine the forms of thinking and feeling nostalgia [saudade] acting in the creation of the poem “Evocação do Recife” (Evocation of Recife), composed at Gilberto Freyre’s request for publication on the commemorative book of a hundred years of Diário de Pernambuco (Pernambuco Daily), also known as Livro do Nordeste (The Northeast book). Also, this article brings up an analysis of these forms of feeling and thinking nostalgia [saudade] present in the reception of “Evocação do Recife” among some intellectuals from the literary milieu of Pernambuco and the Brazilian Northeast in general over the decades of 1920 and 1930, like Gilberto Freyre himself, José Lins do Rêgo and Jorge de Lima.
