This article aims to analyze how the internal iron trade developed in the Senegambia region can help us in a new understanding about the social relations that shaped the Senegambian space during the 16th century. A dichotomous view of the region characterized by the hierarchization of peoples to the north and south of the region in societies with and without state organization is criticized. Using travel accounts, the main line of analysis is based on the perception of different trade routes and the construction of social spaces proposed by Jean-Loup Amselle, which can be understood through the concepts of chain of societies and exchange spaces.
