Ethical principles and good practices

Espacialidades Journal remains aligned with ethical guidelines of the Commitee on Publication Ethics (COPE), following the following recommendations:

 

Responsibility of the Editor

  • The Editor is responsible for the approval and rejection of the manuscripts that will be published, following criteria of originality, clarity, scientific relevance for the journal, and must ensure that the documents that are made public are in compliance with accepted international ethical guidelines. The positions taken should observe the editorial policy of the magazine, and be supported by the position of the Advisory Council and ad hoc Advisers.
  • The editor must ensure that the submitted manuscripts are evaluated by specialists in the field, keeping an eye on cases in which there is an apparent conflict of interest between the author and the author.
  • The editor in case of conflicts of interest (which may be personal, financial, intellectual, professional, political, religious, etc.) in the process of evaluating the manuscript must avoid this function.
  • The editor in the process of evaluating the manuscript must be objective and maintain partiality, and should not make judgments based on political, philosophical, ethnic, nationality and sexuality of the author. And in cases of conflict of interest, the manuscript must be exempted from appreciation.
  • The editor must ensure the confidentiality of the manuscripts while they are in the process of being evaluated. Thus, how to ensure and preserve the anonymity of its collaborators and reviewers, so that they are not identified in the manuscript evaluation process.
  • In case of identification and suspicion of misconduct by the authors, including the identification of fraudulent works, the editor will take the appropriate measures to remedy the problem.

 

Responsibility of the reviewer

  • The reviewer will respect confidentiality in the evaluation of the writings, not using his function to obtain an advantage, disadvantage and discredit the author (a) and third party with the information obtained during the review process.
  • The reviewer must maintain an objective, constructive position and provide feedback that can assist the author in improving his manuscripts, and should avoid in his evaluations joking, inflamed, derogatory and hostile comments.
  • The reviewer in cases of real and potential conflicts of interest (which may be personal, financial, intellectual, professional, political, religious, etc.) must notify the magazine and decline the invitation for this task.
  • The reviewer aware of the author's misconduct or any irregularity regarding the ethical aspects of the work must immediately notify the journal so that the necessary measures can be taken.
  • Exert the role of appraiser as a volunteer, aware of the importance of your collaboration with the journal and science;
  • Inform editors when they are not comfortable evaluating an article due to the thematic distance from the text in their area of ??study;
  • Do not induce, in their respective opinions, that the authors cite texts authored by the evaluating reviewers;
  • Be aware that the appraiser and his practice of blind peer review are fundamental to assess the quality of the journal's content.

 

Responsibility of the author

  • It is the responsibility of the author(a) to observe ethics and good practices for publishing scientific works, avoiding plagiarism, fraud and other violations of content and conduct.
  • The author must ensure that the manuscripts submitted for evaluation have not been published and are not undergoing an evaluation / review process in another journal.
  • The use of manuscripts previously published by the author (example of partial / final results of research developed individually or in groups, thesis or dissertation chapters, scientific initiation reports, etc.) must be explicitly indicated and justified to avoid the self-plagiarism. Observations must be placed in a footnote in a clear, objective manner and without any indication that allows the prior identification of the author (a).
  • Guarantee the originality of the manuscripts submitted for evaluation;
  • Do not practice the manipulation of citations, data and information in order to obtain the desired research result in the material produced;
  • Verify the existence of copyright of the images that will possibly be used in the construction of the text, identifying, whenever used, their authorship and sources.

Plagiarism policy

In cases where the Journal, its collaborators and readers detect undue behavior by the author with the plagiarism of the manuscript, the editor of the Journal will take the necessary steps to ascertain the facts, notifying the author of what happened. When proof of misconduct during the manuscript evaluation process (https://www.plag.pt/) the document will be automatically rejected. If the discovery occurs after publication, the document will pass through the Editor and the Advisory Board for the appropriate measures to be taken and, if necessary, with clarifications and notes from the Editor about the problem in the published volume.

 

Retractions

In the case of errors in a published work that compromises the originality and reading of the article, perceived by the author, collaborators and readers in general, the editor of the Journal should be notified immediately, who will provide the appropriate measures for corrections and adjustments.

In the case of corrections to articles and editions already published, a titled note will be published in the editorial of the subsequent edition: AN ERRATUM.

Ethical Position of the Journal

Espacialidades Journal is committed to complying with good practices with regard to ethical issues for scientific publishing of journals. Therefore, articles that prohibit academic fraud (plagiarism, self-plagiarism, fabrication and falsification of data) are banned from publications. The Editorial Board is also responsible for supervising and punishing violations of ethical conduct in research published in previous editions. If the article already published violates ethical principles, the Editorial Board, in an extraordinary meeting, will notify the author of the exclusion of its article, and by means of a note, explain to the readers the reason for the exclusion in all the media of Espacialidades Journal.
