The backlands are one of the most inhospitable environments in Brazil, almost exclusively due to the lack of water, causing difficulties in maintaining and/or conserving the abundance and diversity of animal and plant species. Therefore, survival in this place becomes arduous. Socially, it is said that, for a woman, resisting in this environment is more difficult than for a man, however Diadorim, a character in Grande sertão: veredas (2021), reveals the opposite. Even though, due to social life circumstances, she had to adopt the male gender to join the cangaço, she survives very well, standing out among the men. From this perspective of the backlands, more specifically in the culture of the jagunços, women seem to be limited to reproduction and entertainment, rarely being listened to in their desires and desires. However, the character Diadorim is respected for representing the male figure, as men are given the right to be more than a sexual body that has fun. Thus, the novel Grande sertão: veredas (ROSA, 2021) is chosen as the basis for analyzing, from a psychoanalytic perspective, female gender roles and the stereotypes involved in this topic, because what can or cannot a man or a woman do/perform, exist to be reevaluated.
