Abstract

Fragments on Aby Warburg by Gertrud Bing, with a foreword by Carlo Ginzburg, brings together for the first time all the texts related to Bing's project of an intellectual biography of Aby Warburg in their original languages –German and English– and in French translation. Presented chronologically and thoroughly documented, these fragments precisely retrace a work in progress, whose outlines can be now clearly perceived. Together they draw a portrait of depth, singularity and intelligence grounded in the long intellectual intimacy that linked Gertrud Bing to Aby Warburg.

Author Biographies

Philippe Despoix, Université de Montreal

Philippe Despoix is ​​professor of comparative literature at the Université de Montréal. He is the founder, among others, of the research group The Warburg Library Network, within which he has published, with Jillian Tomm, Raymond Klibansky and the Warburg Library Network (McGill-Queen’s University Press, 2017). He is also co-editor of Raymond Klibansky, Tradition antique et tolérance moderne (PUM 2016), as well as Raymond Klibansky, Erwin Panofsky & Fritz Saxl, Saturn and Melancholy. Studies in the History of Natural Philosophy, Religion and Art (New edition, McGill-Queen’s University Press, 2019).

Martin Treml, Leibniz-Zentrum für Literatur- und Kulturforschung, Berlin

Martin Treml is research director at Leibniz-Zentrum für Literatur – und Kulturforschung, in Berlin, where he directs the project Aby Warburg et les cultures de la religion. Theorist and historian of religions, he taught in Jerusalem, London, Weimar, Stanford, Innsbruck and Vienne. He is currently a visiting professor in Tbilisi. He co-edited, with Sigrid Weigel and Perdita Ladwig, Aby Warburg, Werke in einem Band (Suhrkamp 2010) and coordinated the editing of the anthology Warburgs Denkraum. Formen, Motive Materialien (Fink 2014).
