Abstract

This essay investigates the artist Marcel Duchamp's (1887-1968) Notes on the Infra-mince, written around 1935 and published after his death by Paul Matisse as Marcel Duchamp Notes, focusing on notes number 01, 06, 16, 02, 46 and 03 in that order. The Infra-mince recounts Duchamp's aesthetic notions in the form of a set of notes, evoking sensory aspects and involving perceptions regarding sensitivity, sensation, language and the complexity of word play. Duchamp, always starting from the imperceptible becoming into being of sensation, bequeathed us, with his Infra-mince notes, what I consider his greatest secret: This concept - Infra-mince - contains all the power of his work and induces us to think about its plastic, theoretical and even historical character. In the notes, we observe a confluence among play, the word, sensation and eroticism. Here, I emphasize the sensory experience as a means to perceive the labile and flexible character of these notes.
