The pursuit of the accumulation of knowledge through written form has traversed the history of the West through various mediums, such as parchment and paper, both in scrolls and codices (manuscripts as well as printed works). The constructions of meaning inscribed in the book format in different areas of knowledge paved the development of the Arts and Sciences from Antiquity to the present day. However, within this same context, there is the longing for a library that would encompass all knowledge and all the books ever written – the ideal of the perfect library. This principle, once sought by Alexander the Great and later aligned and mediated by the Cicero model of the Perfect Orator – emulated by authors from the medieval period to the 18th century (from Jacobus Leodiensis to Johann Mattheson) – was revisited by 18th-century thinkers in the constitution of the concept of the Perfect Library. In this text, we will discuss the practical music works presented by Johann Adam Hiller (1728-1804) in his “Critical Outline for a Musical Library” (1768).
