Abstract

Our purpose is to analyze Machado de Assis’ Memorial de Aires (1908), taking into account the Cynical worldview expressed in the narrating diplomat’s diary. Katabasis – a descent into hell and a search for knowledge – allows the composition of the manuscript as an outcast and recorder of living reality. Result of daily and philosophical work, the counselor’s writing is made possible by katabasis and edited as a novel-diary. Employing the tanatographical criticism, we interpret the insulation as a creative strategy made by the work, which, although Stoical, shows itself as Cynical and ironic. Such Stoical meetings fomented through polyphony and poetics problems receive the contribution from the following scholars: Bakhtin, Bachelard, Branham, and Goulet-Cazé; Alfredo Bosi, Paulo Bezarra and Augusto da Silva Junior.
