Introduction: The pandemic of COVID-19 brought innumerous challenges for the health and education of the Brazilian population. The extension actions developed by Higher Education Institutions, great allies in the promotion of education and dissemination of knowledge, also found the challenge of transposing the walls of universities to bring reliable information and scientific knowledge in times of social isolation and a culture of misinformation. Objective:  The aim of this research study is to report the experience gained through the implementation of a university extension project that made use of social media to disseminate updated news on nutrition, health and food safety in the context of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Methodology:  This is a descriptive study, of the experience report type, in which the execution of the university extension project: "Decomplicating nutrition and food safety in the context of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic" is described. Results: The development of the extension project during the pandemic succeeded in promoting the socialization of instructions, tips and information on food safety, health and nutrition, making use of social media to disseminate tips and updated information on nutrition and food safety in the context of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Conclusions: It was verified that both in-person and distance extensionist actions have common characteristics, which include dedication, involvement, active posture of the coordinating teacher, students and the public attended.
