Introduction: Benzodiazepines are among the most prescribed drugs, especially in Western countries, where estimates show an annual consumption of 1% to 3% of the population. Objective: To study the profile of the consumption of benzodiazepines between 2019 and 2020. Methodology: The unemployment rate (IBGE), consumption of benzodiazepines (SNGPC/ANVISA/Brazil) and the number of hospitalizations for poisoning with exposure (accidental or intentional) were studied. self-intoxication and adverse effects to anticonvulsants, sedatives, hypnotics, antiparkinsonians and psychotropics (DATASUS). Results: The unemployment rate increased throughout Brazil in 2020 (13.5%). In Brazil, there was a 9.81% increase in the consumption of industrialized clonazepam in 2020, the highest increase was in the Northeast (22.52%). In 2020, 38,743,825 manipulated benzodiazepine capsules were consumed, while in 2019 there were 35,874,947 capsules. In 2019, there were 2,554 hospitalizations in Brazil and 1,814 in 2020, the main cause was self-intoxication due to intentional drug exposure, 61.2% in 2019 and 56.1% in 2020. Conclusions: There was an increase in the consumption of industrial benzodiazepines in 2020 being intentional self-intoxication by medication use was the main cause of hospitalization. There is a need to control consumption and surveillance of psychotropic drugs since these drugs are among those at risk of hospitalization due to accidental exposure or not, self-intoxication or adverse effects.
