Antonio Candido, leitor do Fausto

Abstract

This text deals with the presence of the Goethian Faust in Antonio Candido’s critical work, especially in the Formation of Brazilian Literature (but also in the essay "The albatross and  the chinese", published almost half a century later). At the heart of the text is the discussion of the relevance (or not) of characterizing Faust I as “the most complete breviary of which the romantic soul has for us of essential”, as described in the Formation of Brazilian Literature.
