The semantic-functional aspects of volition

Abstract

In this paper we discuss the modal values of volition. In the first part, we approach the concept of volition based on the main linguistic studies related to the category. Then, we analyze the subdivision of the volition into four modal values based on XXXX (2017b), which can be desideração, optação, intenção and exortação. For that, we turn to the speeches of Pope Francis were delivered in Spanish and disseminated online. After the analysis of the corpus, we conclude that the modal values are distinguished based on the evaluation that the speaker makes about what he wants as something that he or she does not control, having a mental and or actional character, and understanding the relationships that establishes with the others that surround it.
