It is the concern of this article to examine carnivalization as an animating element of the modernist literary spirit of "Padaria Espiritual", headed by Antônio Sales in the capital of Ceará at the end of the 19th century, and the Anthropophagic Movement, which emerged, under the influence of the Modern Art Week of 22, from the ideas of Oswald de Andrade in the 20th century's late 20s, in the capital of São Paulo. For this purpose, we take Bakhtinian thought (BAKHTIN, 2010; 2015) to discuss the elements that constitute carnivalized literature and, based on this theoretical matrix, we analyze, in particular, the carnivalesque worldview in the Installation Program of the "Padaria Espiritual" and in the modernist movement of Anthropophagy. We found that both literary manifestations have subversive and critical elements in common, which makes themselves present in a carnivalized manner, through laughter and irony in the form of a jocular spirit and in the defense of local identities, seeking to dismantle certain hegemonic ideas of its time.
