The central focus of this article is the analysis of the transition of Tennessee Williams’ plays to Hollywood cinema in the 1950s. It investigates how Williams’ theatrical works, which addressed taboo subjects, were adapted for film without losing their critical and psychosocial impact. By examining how Hollywood dealt with these themes, particularly under the censorship of the Hays Code, the article reveals the strategies of softening and the cultural implications of these adaptations. The study explores the compromises made and the visual and narrative techniques used by directors to circumvent censorship, highlighting the contradictions of society and how these films paved the way for greater artistic freedom in the following years. In this way, it identifies the contribution and impact of these works on Hollywood at that historical moment.
