Abstract

Abstract: This study addresses issues related to Angolan language and culture in the context of teaching. Its main objective was to analyze how the relationship between Angolan language and culture is addressed in Portuguese language textbooks, with the aim of understanding the conception of language that underlies the teaching of this subject in Angola. The research is situated in the field of Linguistics, particularly in the teaching and learning of Portuguese. It is extremely important because the questions raised throughout the analysis seem pertinent and seek to provoke reflections that articulate the theoretical orientations for teaching Portuguese in Angola and the interpretation made of reality. The theoretical framework mobilized focuses on the field of current studies on language teaching and learning, with emphasis on the notion of language and language, the role of the textbook, and the relationship between language and culture, based on Geraldi (1999) and Bittencourt (2008). Regarding methodological procedures, this research analyzes the 7th-grade Portuguese language textbook, which addresses text study, comprehension and language function questions, and writing activities in the first unit of the textbook. Based on this analysis, it concludes that the treatment of language issues in this material reflects the conception of language adopted by the Angolan curriculum guidelines, with important implications for teaching this subject, as it fails to take into account recent studies in the field of language sciences, particularly regarding the socio-interactionist teaching perspective.
