In view of the growing number of genres that make use of discursive multimodality today, especially comic books (HQs), which through their original texts or adaptations of literary classics, gain space and recognition in society, becoming a phenomenon of mass culture, this article seeks to understand how verbovisual elements (image, text, fonts, colors, etc.) merge for the construction of meanings of the text, based on the adaptation of the short story “The secret cause” By Machado de Assis, recreated by Francisco Vilachã and Fernando AA Rodrigues, and published by the publisher Escala Educacional in 2006. For this purpose, the studies related to multimodality developed by Dionísio (2006) will be considered, as well as the considerations on the defended comics. by Magalhães (1990), Mendonça (2002) and Nascimento (2016), and the works on literary adaptations, made by Guerini and Barbosa (2013). In this way, literary quadrinizations become the object of our attention both for the new language engendered in the meeting of the verbal (classic) and the iconic, as well as for the meanings they carry.
