When dealing with a new concept, the need for a clear terminological definition arises. This is relevant when discussing the concepts of Human, Smart, Creative, and Sustainable Cities (CHICS in Portuguese), representing new approaches in knowledge application. This article aims to verify the conceptualization of these terms found in the literature. Method: We conducted exploratory research, through domain analysis, using bibliometric and textual analysis tools to examine concepts about CHICS. The sampling for the selection of materials ensured their representativeness. Results: We employed models and diagrams to identify common terms in the literature, such as urban, development, intelligent, life, economy, environment, social, and sustainable, guiding basic aspects for the formulation of a unified concept of CHICS. Conclusion: The importance of considering the aspects of this study for the elaboration of a concept of CHICS is emphasized, as they are common points of several authors on the understanding of the theme. This understanding also guides the next steps of this research, which aims to understand in the future how libraries can contribute to the development and performance in the context of CHICS, considering their particularities and possible interconnections.
