Knowledge and practices under debate at the International Congresses of Physical Education (1900-1913)

The International Congresses of Physical Education were a series of events held between 1900 and 1913 in Europe, marked by controversy at every session. The purpose of this article is to analyze the clashes between “scholars” and “practitioners” at the International Congresses of Physical Education. These ideas will be analyzed in dialogue with cultural history through the lens of Michel Foucault, particularly with regard to his writings on the production of discourses. We used official documents from the events and publications in journals as sources. The disputes between “scholars” and “practitioners” were part of the process of establishing Physical Education as a discipline. In this process, a hierarchy of knowledge emerged in which scientific knowledge was regarded as more legitimate than practical knowledge. Thus, the institutionalization of the discourse of Physical Education as a discipline granted actors the power to exclude and silence those who were (or were not) authorized to express themselves on the subject.
