ABSTRACT
In this article, we present the socio-functional study conducted in a community of Sertão da Ressaca, Vitória da Conquista - BA, starting from the main objective of describing the variation / layering between the pronouns você and cê, in pre-verbal position, as subject of finite sentences. First, we highlight some peculiarities present in the socio-history of the items in focus and, later, the theoretical bases that supported the research, that is, the conception of Sociofunctionalism as a theory that emerges at the interface of two other theories, Variationist Sociolinguistics and North American Functionalism focused on grammaticalization. In methodological terms, the research sample consisted of 24 (twenty four) interviews, extracted from two oral corpora, the Corpus of the Popular Portuguese of Vitória da Conquista (Corpus PPVC) and the Corpus of the Cult Portuguese of Vitória da Conquista (Corpus CPVC) and stratified according to gender, age and education. We analyzed a total of 788 data, 56% of occurrences of pronoun você and 44% of variant form cê. Among other considerations, we obtained evidence that, in Vitória da Conquista - BA, the variation between the pronoun você and cê is in a kind of change in progress, but in opposite directions, since, if we consider the speech of the younger informants from Popular Portuguese, the variant cê is in increasing use, while informants of Cult Portuguese constituents of the early age groups demonstrate a more conservative linguistic attitude, in the promotion of the pronoun você.
Keywords: Pronoun Você (you). Variant cê (you). Sociofunctionalism. Variation/Layering.
