Metagenres are an important resource for the production of genres, we understand that scientific methodology manuals works as metagenres and play the role in guiding the production of academic genres. In this sense, this research had the general objective of analyzing how scientific methodology manuals guide the production of the academic review genre. Therefore, this research is based on the notion of genre, purpose and discursive community by Swales (1990), metagenres by Giltrow (2002), Bawarshi and Reiff (2013), Cantuário (2020), academic review by Araújo (1996), Bezerra (2001, 2009), Ferraz (2007), Russell (2009), Motta Roth and Hendger (2010) and Ancieto (2016). To achieve the proposed objectives, we analyzed the academic review section of three scientific methodology manuals: Scientific and Research Methodology (2007),Textual Production at the University (2010), Fundamentals of Scientific Methodology (2017).The data showed that all the manuals analyzed are able to guide the production of the academic review genre, however, we point out the need for a clearer and more detailed approach, specifically in relation to the communicative purpose of the genre in question, since the users of the manuals need to of objective information and the function of this metagenre is to promote this orientation. The conclusions of this research contribute to the users of the scientific methodology manual metagenre, since we demonstrate that they are able to guide the production of the genre, even though the sample is small, we believe it to be a reflection of the reality of most manuals.
