This article, arising from a scientific undergraduate project, seeks to understand how the act of reading memes in an intercultural perspective can help in the development of criticity and autonomy, as well as in raising awareness of cultural issues in graduates of the Degree in Letters, English Language and Literature at the State University of Bahia, Campus II – Alagoinhas, still with the intention of bringing the teaching methodologies of LI to the reality of its future students. To this end, the project is based on the discursive meaning of genres (BAKHTIN, 2006; MARCUSCHI, 2002), as reflectors of societies and direct influencers of them, thus aligning itself with the theory of convergence culture by Henry Jenkins (2013) to understand the phenomenon of democratization of the means of content production, the social context in which memes appear. The concept of reading to which we link in this research is holistic (FREIRE, 2011), in order to appreciate the meme in its structural and extralinguistic sphere, thus allowing the approach of the intercultural aspect in the genre. Following the pre-established goals, we carried out the reading of the initial theoretical contribution, the selection of other texts that converged with the proposed theme, and the production of reviews and files about them. After this movement of familiarization with the bibliography/references, we established the criteria for selecting memes for the workshops that will be based on the precepts of collaborative research (IBIAPINA, 2016) and elaborated the topics to be explained and studied together in collaborative sessions.
