The main objective of this study was to investigate the correlation between reading competence and word processing in order to characterize lexical access during morphological recognition of written words. We sought: (1) to correlate the influence of reading with the processing of morphologically complex words; (2) investigate whether lexical access is strongly affected by reading competence and, finally, (3) compare the performance between groups of students from different modalities (High School in Youth and Adult Education and Higher Education) to verify whether the discrepancy in reading competence interferes with lexical access and, therefore, with the processing of morphologically complex words. In terms of data collection instrument, we used two methodological resources to analyze the impact of reading competence on the processing of morphologically complex words: (1) the experimental technique of Open Priming via the PCIbex Farm web-based platform, to analyze the mental processing of words and (2) the Reader Profile Questionnaire, via Google Forms, to collect information about individual perception and the influence of the classroom on students' reading habits and, thus, distribute them into the categories of Good Readers - GR and Readers with Difficulties in Understanding - RDU(SOUSA, HÜBNER, 2019). Using the ANOVA test, the results showed main effects (education, frequency and type of prime-target relationship) and interaction effects (prime-frequency and group-frequency). We conclude that the trends presented in this research corroborate the findings of Garcia (2009) in Brazilian Portuguese (BP), the study that supported this proposition.
