This article aims to critically analyze the linguistic policies adopted during European colonialism in Angola and their sociolinguistic and educational implications for that nation. To this end, we conducted a documentary research, reviewing works by authors who address linguistic and educational policies in Angola, as well as official documents, such as the Constitution and Law No. 17/16 of October 7, 2016, in order to examine whether what is ensured in these documents is put into practice. In addition, we systematized results of descriptive studies, with the purpose of verifying how Portuguese is configured in Angola, since the documents guiding educational policies defend the teaching of the Portuguese language. In summary, the reflections show that, although Angola has freed itself politically from the yoke of Portugal, colonial linguistic policies are still present in the educational system, reinforcing the hierarchy between languages and contributing to the perpetuation of a Eurocentric curriculum, which does not value or promote local languages and sociocultural practices.
