Abstract

Introduction: The use of social media, particularly Instagram, among adolescents and young adults has intensified in recent years, becoming a social phenomenon that influences forms of interaction, expression, and identity construction. Objective: Therefore, this research aims to analyze articles examining the motivations driving the heavy use of social media (focusing on Instagram) among adolescents and young adults, exploring the relationship between this digital behavior and the processes of sharing information and knowledge in virtual environments. Methodology: This is an exploratory-descriptive study employing a systematic literature review method to identify, evaluate, and consolidate existing studies. Results: The analysis reveals the following factors: 1) Usage Motivations as a Central Analytical Axis; 2) Information Behavior and Self-Presentation; 3) Influence of Personality Traits and Contextual Factors; 4) Emotional Expression, in conjunction with the platform's sociotechnical conditions; and 5) Platform and Feature Specificities. Conclusion: The study indicates that digital platforms like Instagram function not only as mediums for mediated social interaction but also as dynamic environments capable of fostering knowledge creation and dissemination. There is a need for future research focused on the critical and reflective use of social media (beyond the scope of Instagram) to optimize its role in knowledge sharing and the socio-emotional development of Brazilian adolescents and young adults. Searching other databases is suggested for future research.
