This article consists of a theoretical review on the concept of social capital from a sociological perspective. The exhibition is organized around a set of notions that, in our view, encompass the central properties for understanding social capital: norms, trust, networks and governance. From the examination of specialized literature, we identified that norms and values constitute the basis on which social capital is formed from the creation of favorable conditions for cooperation and the development of mutual trust; the sharing of knowledge and knowledge contributes to the creation of networks of trust and access to collective resources; deliberative practices contribute to the formation of social capital through argumentative legitimization, equalization of different forms of perception of reality and the circulation of information that enhance decision-making processes and, finally, governance relates to social capital in the insofar as it implies the sharing of power, enhancing the expressions of the social actors who take part in a collective action. It is hoped that the present text will contribute to the debate on the subject in question and the deepening of the use of the concept of social capital in the most diverse areas of social reality.
