Abstract

This article discusses school rivalry as a social, historical, and cultural phenomenon. It draws on the work of Mikhail Bakhtin and Voloshinov and adopts the historical-cultural interpretative framework (Xavier, 2000; Chartier, 1990; Julia, 2001) as an analytical lens. The corpus consists of articles from the newspaper O Liberal. An inventory technique was employed, based on Lopez (2002) and Silva and Petry (2011), to catalog, describe, and organize the occurrences that thematize school events and civic demonstrations. It concludes that school rivalry is not reduced to individual or institutional competition, but constitutes a dialogical and ideological practice in which identities, prestige, and power relations are socially constructed and negotiated.
