AUTISM AS A JUSTIFICATION FOR UNDESIRABLE BEHAVIORS
REFLECTION FROM A CASE STUDY

With recent changes in diagnostic criteria with greater scope, there has been a greater possibility of identifying autism in recent years. This may also be reflected in a new way of justifying behaviors and feelings considered deviant or unwanted through this neurodevelopmental disorder. This study aims to investigate the phenomenon of pathologization in the attribution of the diagnosis of autism by health professionals, education professionals, families and also by the diagnosed person themselves. Based on a case study of an 18-year-old young man treated at a Caps IJ and reflections on the scientific literature, we discuss the possibility that some ASD investigation cases are related to the pathologization of normal behaviors. The diagnosis of ASD, in this way, can emerge as a socially acceptable justification for behaviors of another order, such as shyness, difficulty communicating or even homosexuality, as in the case study analyzed.
