Abstract

Over time, the expression 'freedom' is recovered as a powerful rhetorical tool to justify behaviors that devalue the practice of the collective. By way of illustration, we can observe the emergence of individuals who occupy the institutional political scene and express opinions that have the potential to be offensive to segments of society, generally minorities. The analysis of this scenario, therefore, requires a careful approach to the concept of freedom that allows the expansion of the horizon of interpretations to understand the historical process that enriched the concept of freedom with diverse meanings and symbolism. In this sense, the article intends to examine ideas and conceptions of freedom from two authors who examine this construct in the light of philosophical thought. As a contribution to the public debate, we seek to create a synthesis that dialogues with the analyzes carried out and the contemporary school context. To meet this objective, a brief bibliographical review was carried out on the thoughts of Foucault and Arendt and a qualitative analysis of this bibliography. Therefore, our reflection on the complex and controversial concept of "freedom of expression" seeks to indicate that, initially, we must approach freedom as a polysemic term, loaded with sacredness and permeated by ideological passions. Our reflection is also an invitation to the role of the school in promoting libertarian learning and conduct, highlighting educational principles that reaffirm the importance of coexistence to the detriment of the autonomy that is often acclaimed, but sometimes disregarded.
