Abstract

This research investigates the responsibility of the Brazilian State in the organization of education between the 19th and early 20th centuries. It aims to understand the political and educational limits and disputes in the consolidation of a national system. The methodology was based on a bibliographic and documentary survey, using works in the History of Education and records from the National Campaign for Free Schools (CNGE) in Ubatã, Bahia. The results reveal that inequalities of gender, class, and race persisted, along with tensions between state centralization and local initiatives. It concludes that state responsibility was traversed by competing projects that guaranteed a more democratic schooling, but maintained actions of social exclusion and identity inequalities.
