Abstract

This work falls within the field of History of Education and analyzes the social representations of female teaching present in school culture. It seeks traces of how the constitution of teaching was associated with care, vocation, and motherhood. It is based on the field of school culture with authors such as Alves (2010), Varela and Alvarez-Uria (1992), Boto (2014), and Julia (2001). It uses documentary research, with analysis of the albums of retired teachers. Ginzburg's indicial method is adopted, as discussed by Tinem and Borges (2003), which guides the analysis of clues beyond what is visible in the document. The teachers' albums reveal themselves as material evidence of school culture, female teaching, and representations of motherhood, care, and vocation in teaching.
